Karina Chikitova, three years old, lives with her family and her dog, Naida, in the remote Sakha Republic in Siberia. This remote Siberian wilderness is known for its extreme and severe climate and vast tundra vegetation.
One day, Karina wandered off into the nearby forests with her dog. She set out to try to follow her dad and ended up getting lost in the wild.
Four days have passed before Karina’s parents were able to report the child as missing since the area had no telephone network. Both the locals and the authorities knew that a little girl couldn’t survive a bear-infested forest. Naida was Karina’s only chance of survival as temperatures were already near freezing.
All of the villagers worked together to search for the missing three-year-old. They searched for days but did not find any sign of the toddler. More than a week has passed, and they are already starting to fear the worst. There’s no way for the little girl to survive that long without starving or being mauled by wild animals.
It was already the eleventh day when Naida appeared out of nowhere. Their hearts sank at the sight of the dog, initially knowing that Karina was truly alone. The team found a ray of hope when the dog acted as if he wanted them to follow him. They followed the dog with mixed feelings of hope and anxiety. The dog led the search team to the girl! They finally found her! She was lying still on a grass bed that Naida had built for her. She was covered in insect bites and had already lost a lot of weight. She was dehydrated and had to stay in the hospital for several days.
She narrated how Nadia had kept her alive. She said Nadia had fended off all the wild animals and kept her warm while in the savage wilderness. They ate berries and drank river water to survive. Then the loyal dog eventually went out to find the rescuers and led them to the girl. Karina has now fully recovered, thanks to Nadia.
The local authorities believed the story would have had a tragic ending if it weren’t for the faithful dog. They installed a statue of Karina and Nadia in honor of the dog’s bravery!
