A dog that survived animal cruelty saved the life of a 3-year-old child, according to the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba, Michigan.

The puppy, originally called Petunia, arrived at the shelter in April with cracked ribs, two broken legs, and a stomach full of carpet. Her previous owner has just been found guilty and sentenced for animal abuse.

Back then, nobody could have believed that the abused pup, now called Peanut, would become a hero and save a life. One morning, at around 11 o’clock, Peanut began acting strangely in her new owners’ house. She was heard barking as she ran up and down the stairs.

Peanut came to get one of his owners in the garage, where he was working on some tasks, and let him know that she needed to go outside immediately. He claimed he could hear her moving around upstairs but could not figure out why. It turns out that there was a very good explanation for Peanut’s strange conduct – the dog felt something was wrong outside.

Peanut’s owner let her out, and she dashed towards the field behind the house at full speed. Her owner pursued her, and to his surprise, he discovered a naked, shivering three-year-old girl curled up in a ball. He carefully snatched her up, wrapped her in his sweatshirt, and gently carried her inside. He then dialed 911 and informed them of the situation.

What happened after was just as sad and heartbreaking. When the police and ambulance arrived, the small child did not have enough energy to talk and could only utter the word ‘doggie.’ Peanut’s incredible instinct helped save the life of that young girl that day.

According to one of the policemen who rushed to the incident, child protective services have already removed the little girl and a sibling from their home. The girl, placed in a foster home, is now safe and well.
