When you set out on an ocean adventure, you never know what might happen.

Two surfers recently had an incredible experience that perfectly exemplifies this concept. The characters in this charmingly “pawsitive” story include a long-lost dog, a cave on the beach, two helping surfers, and a very relieved set of pet owners.

A couple, pet owners, and environment lovers ventured out with their dog to climb the arduous Juan de Fuca Trail. Their dog got separated from them at some point during the journey. The couple went on a search to locate their lost dog, but they were unsuccessful. They searched for months and almost given up hope of ever seeing their puppy again.

Zach Regan and Matty Johnson were on an overnight surfing and fishing trip on Vancouver Island aboard a small aluminum boat. The two attempted to flee to safety to avoid an impending storm when they made an unexpected discovery.

Onshore, an animal that appeared to be too small to be a bear or wolf was observed inside a cave. Matty told the Pup News Network that they were attempting to beat an impending storm when they decided to save the poor dog.

The dog was obviously in poor health. She was cold, terrified, and entirely out of ease. Matty worked hard to lure the dog out of the cave. Matty carefully placed the puppy on top of her surfboard and paddled out to the waiting boat and her companion Zach.

Transferring the dog to the boat was brutal and nearly disastrous. Zach told CTV News that he came with the boat and grabbed the dog before she sank to the bottom due to her frailty. Once inside the aluminum boat, the pair set about warming the dog up and making her feel more secure.

A surfing bag was the only item the pals had to wrap up the dog. They put it around the frightened dog and tried to cuddle with her. The two returned to dry land to take the following steps to search for the dog’s family.

The couple who had lost their dog, Stella, were delighted to learn that she had been found alive. Matty told GNN that “when the owners—long since resigned to the loss of their dog—got word she was safe,” there was nothing but good vibes all around.

According to the rescuers, the rescue featured a “wetsuit, a surfboard, a lasso, almost being bitten in the face, a reef, tremendous waves, and incredible teamwork.” This one-of-a-kind rescue story has a very joyful and inspiring ending.
