Daya, the 3-year-old pregnant dog, is expected to give birth to nine puppies. Before Daya ended up in an animal shelter in South Carolina, she was discovered wandering the cold winter streets all by herself.

Unfortunately, since the public shelter had so many dogs, Daya became one of the pups included in the list to be euthanized. When Halfway There Rescue found out about Daya’s predicament, they immediately helped her find a foster home where she could safely deliver her puppies.

Daya’s rescuers brought her to the clinic for a quick checkup where they were given the tragic news. The x-ray results did not show any evidence of living puppies.

One of the volunteers, Jennifer Werner, said to The Dodo that Day’s body was absorbing her puppies. Daya’s uterus became severely infected, which required a critical operation within the hour of her arrival at the clinic.

Although the life-saving surgery gave Daya another day to live, she could not handle losing her unborn puppies. Her loss broke her heart so much that she almost spiraled into depression.

Jennifer shared that Daya could not hide her motherly instincts. She picked up socks, toys, or anything that lied on the floor, and cleaned them as if it were her puppies.

Daya brought the objects she picked up wherever she went and looked in dire need of having a baby to care for. Daya could not understand why her puppies were not with her.

Fortunately, the group who rescued Daya received a call about an abandoned puppy, later named Raisin, who suffered from skin infections and parasites. The puppy’s condition was so severe that the doctors had no choice but to remove one of her eyes.

The veterinarian team brought Raisin to Daya, and they instantly bonded. Daya and Raisin helped each other recover from their physical and emotional wounds, and are now inseparable.
