Imagine never knowing freedom all your life. Peanut, a brown mixed-breed dog, has been in chains all his life. His owners, who live in a rural area in Pennsylvania, does not seem to care much about him. They don’t abuse him, but it is evident that they neglected him for so many years.

Peanut knew nothing but the lawn where his old dog house stood. With a heavy chain around his neck, Peanut hasn’t left the yard and lived a miserable life. After the property fence fell over, the neighbors finally became aware of the dog’s situation. They reported the case to authorities, to no avail.

Soon enough, volunteers from HOPE for Erie Animal Wellness, a nonprofit organization that helps chained- up dogs, got the report about Peanut. They visited the poor dog and found a way to free him. One of the volunteers’ mothers, Russelline Steinbuhle, decided to see Peanut herself.

According to Russelline, Peanut suffers from a deplorable living condition. His shed is falling apart, with a rotting floor and holes in the roof. The poor dog has no other options but to lie on the muddy ground. Russelline approached Peanut’s owners and offered help. Thankfully, the owners did not refuse assistance.

At first, Hope for Erie Animal Wellness provided a new house, a longer chain, and some new toys and food bowls for Peanut. The dog enjoyed all the new things! The longer chain even allowed him to sleep on comfortable grass. But it was not enough for Russelline and the volunteers. They asked Peanut’s owners if they wanted to surrender the dog to them. They said yes!

The rescuers took Peanut with them. The dog’s excitement was palpable! He received what seemed to be his first bath and first trip to the vet. After that, the volunteers finally brought him to their facility, where he was set loose. The volunteers are happy to see the fantastic dog finally living his life. At last, Peanut is free!

And then it happened, we took Peanut off the chain and dove him to his new life.
