Dodger is a homeless Pit Bull mix that was taken off the streets and brought to a dog shelter. Like most dogs of that particular breed, he could have met a very undesirable fate – he would have been placed on a kill list.

Fortunately, though, his destiny was to save human lives and maintain peace in the community. Thanks to his intelligence and personality, he was among a few rescue dogs that were chosen to be a part of a K9 program.

Mixed-breed dogs

Traditionally, K9 unit members are purebred dogs such as the Belgian Malinois or the German Shepherd. But recently, there has actually been a surge in the number of mixed-breed dogs that are utilized for this important job. This has made the program more cost-effective.

After Dodger was chosen, he was taken to a K9 training facility where he was taught to detect drugs, weapons, and explosives. For several months, he and his handler, Officer Eric Keaton from the Spur Police Department, underwent intensive training.

The once homeless dog breezed through the program and graduated among the top in his class. His skills were exceptional, and it showed on his first day at the job.

Drugs detected

Dodger and his handler attended a swearing-in ceremony before hitting the streets on his first day at work. Seven hours into his shift, the talented dog indicated to his handler that there was a suspicious scent in the air.

Trusting his K9 partner’s keen senses, Officer Keeton let him lead the way. The dog went inside an abandoned camper and went straight to a wooden box. There they found a clear plastic bag that contained a white crystal substance.

After testing it, they confirmed that it was methamphetamine. Everybody was impressed at the accuracy of his skills.

From then on, Dodger has made a name for himself in their department. He is a well-respected member of their unit and is highly relied upon for special missions.
